The Guide To Travertine Tiles
Travertine is particularly an attractive variant of limestone. It features a marble-like, fibrous, and attractive pattern with the presence of earth-like tones. These features make travertine tiles the most sought-after natural stones for building materials and outdoor landscaping. Historically, abundant travertine was used for bespoke artwork and architecture across the globe.
A good portion of travertine for such purposes came from the hills in Italy. However, in the modern era, travertine has become quite famous. It is effectively sourced from Peru, Mexico, Iran, and Turkey. An increasing number of homeowners in Australia are becoming aware of the importance of travertine tiles.
Why Choose Travertine For Your Home
Travertine is one of the best natural stone tiles you can use, given its classic, warm look and durability for temperamental climates.
Melbourne and other parts of coastal Australia are known for their unpredictable weather, with intermittent periods of rain and sunshine throughout the day. Travertine tiles are capable of withstanding extreme heats, retaining warm temperatures without becoming a safety hazard and are soft on the feet.
Conversely, they’re also the perfect addition to sections of your home that are susceptible to moisture such as pools, bathrooms and spa areas. Travertine is ideal for using as pool pavers and our entire collection comes with matching pool coping tiles.
If you’re looking for a low maintenance option that is easy to clean and maintain its natural beauty, travertine pavers are the ideal tiling solution that delivers a stunning, aesthetic finish.
Laying Travertine Tiles
Laying travertine tiles (and all natural stone tiles for that matter), is a relatively simple process but it is recommended to have a qualified tiling professional install them for you.
The nature of your installation process depends on the thickness of the paver. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend the following:
12mm Thick: Pavers should be laid onto a concrete slab or over waterproofed suitably thick cement sheet. Great for balconies and decks, especially where its important to keep the overall weight down.
20mm Thick: Pavers can be laid as above or onto a compacted road base into a wet slurry of sand and cement.
30mm Thick: Pavers can be laid as both above or onto a compacted road base into a dry sand bed, great for tiling over easements or where you require water permeation to occur for drainage.
Travertine stone does contain natural ailments such as pitting and catspaw on the surface of the paver, but it can be minimised using a colour-matching grout.
Maintenance & Care
Although naturally durable and weather-resistant, stone still needs some extra love to ensure that it maintains its beauty and strength all year round.
It is highly recommended to seal your travertine pavers with an invisible penetrating sealer. We recommend advising against using a colour sealer, as these tend to highlight any natural ailments the stone may have that are not visible to the naked eye.
Travertine also responds well to pressure washing, so it is strongly advised to avoid using chemical agents that may stain the surface of the stone. For any spillage or simple cleaning, it’s recommended to use a pressure washer with the nozzle at least 300mm above the face of the stone.
